Chapter 9 - Declan

Declan’s head pounded violently under his skull. Everything felt like it hurt all over his body as he slowly sat up in bed.

“You’re alive!” Aedan’s shout hurt his ears over the ringing. “When I woke up, I found us all in this cavern, but you and Brenden were out like the dead. I’ve been so worried.”

Flashes of water and fighting came through in layered pieces as his brain processed what had occurred. The looks of pure terror in the men’s faces that gazed at him before he’d charge at them. He’d never felt so powerful. His body could do so many new and wonderful things and swim or run at a speed he’d never imagined. Then he’d seen Aedan and clarity rang through. He’d always protect his brother.

Salixa wanted them all to be together, and that’s why they’d gone into the forest. If Aedan was here, hopefully that meant that Keane was, too. He’d been on the shores of the loch, as well.

Brenden groaned and sat up, clutching his head. “Is she alright?” As soon as the question was out, it was all Declan could think about. She wasn’t in the cavern with them, and he’d left the fight before she had.

“She?” Aedan asked and glanced between him and Brenden. “You mean the woman on the shore? I think she was the one controlling the beasts.”

“I’m unharmed,” Salixa’s alluring voice called from the rocky entrance. “I brought some potions for your heads. I figure they might hurt a little after your first transformations.”

Everything in Declan’s being settled upon seeing her stroll in. Her dark black hair now bounced in blue curls, and she gave them all a dazzling smile. Aedan’s jaw dropped as Brenden rushed over to their little woman, checking her over for any markings. Nothing seemed to be out of place. His twin senses told him that Aedan was clearly confused.

“Are you sure that you aren’t hurt? I could see them firing at you with their bows.” Brenden growled out as he twirled her around in front of them.

“I’ve been dealing with the awful humans for a long time on my own. They will never hurt me again, I promise you.” Salixa scratched his chest gently and offered him a vial before she turned to where Declan sat.

Something about the way she said that made him angry. There was a history there that he wanted all the details of. How long had she been alone before they’d encountered her?

She strode over to jostle some of his hair, and he loved the feeling of her fingers running along his scalp. “I’m so sorry I didn’t think about that, my loves. Seeing you sleep in such discomfort after you changed back was heartbreaking. For even a few days, I wanted to do what I can.”

Salixa handed the second vial to Declan, and he popped the lid to drink it down in one gulp. It tasted like some type of berry, and the fog in his head cleared up almost immediately.
